What made you want to start your business?
I love the sun. LOVE it. I grew up spending my summer days on the lake or on the beach soaking in the rays with nothing but Hawaiian Tropic oil all over my body. As I got older and had less time to spend laying out, I began hitting the tanning beds. That 10-20 minutes of heat and peace was pure bliss. When I became a mom I began being more cautious of my children and keeping them protected. I also began to see the effects of all the sun damage my poor skin had gotten from all the years not protecting myself. I missed being tan but I also wanted to find an option that was safe. I began researching airbrush tans. There weren’t many options in the area and being sprayed in a booth did not have fabulous reviews. I wanted a natural glow, without the orange streaks. After months of research, training and trial and error, my business was born.
What do you feel has been a big part of your success?
I am humbled at how quickly my business grew in four years. I did not start my business with any expectations but only with the intention of being something fun on the side. It’s always fun, but not just a side business! I am successful because I treat my clients like family and I am always my professional yet relaxed self. I am always researching, educating and practicing new techniques in order to stay ahead of my trade so I can always ensure I am providing my clients with the best, most current airbrush tanning options. I offer a comfortable, casual environment for my clients and I am confident in my airbrush tan skills. Having a supportive husband at home that understands my constant hustle has been a huge part of my success as well.
What is your favorite part of being a spray tanner?
Confidence. Confidence is beautiful. Confidence is sexy. Confidence is strong. That is what I love most about air brush tanning. Something so simple can bring you from 0 to 100 in 10 minutes! As someone that struggled with low self esteem and body image most of my life, being able to help others feel beautiful is priceless. To see someone that walked into my studio completely uncomfortable but walk out on cloud nine is why I do what I do. I’m not only giving them a safer option to bronzed beautiful skin but also the confidence to rock the beauty that has always been there, I just helped them enhance it.
What was an example of a challenge of being a business owner that you had to adapt to?
As a wife and mom of four, being an entrepreneur has definitely had its challenges. Trying to find a balance for family, myself and business is no easy task. I’ve gone from being a mobile business, to mobile and in a salon to strictly in a salon, trying to find that perfect fit for my business. I’ve changed the name and then changed it again, I’ve changed product lines, always looking for the most high end perfect option for my clients. I’ve had to learn that I can’t always accommodate everyone and had to adjust my availability to allow myself a day or two off with my family. Learning what works and what doesn’t and accepting that all my “kick ass” ideas are really not all that “kick ass” after all.
What is an example of a marketing tactic that you found successful to increase your business?
When I started my business all my advertising was done on social media. Specifically Instagram and Facebook. At first I used photos taken from the internet but as my business grew, I only used clients photos when advertising. It allows potential new clients to see familiar faces in our county rocking an airbrush tan. Plus, my clients love sharing photos that they feel confident and beautiful in! Although I post on my business Facebook page as well as my business Instagram page regularly, I don’t typically advertise. I am purely referral based and I am so thankful for my clientele! I track referrals and offer discounts to my loyal clients that send business my way. Networking with local wedding vendors (event planners, photographers, makeup artists, hair stylist, etc) has also aided in increasing my business. I will occasionally offer a flash sale, first to my clients and then I open it up for a short time to new clients.
What suggestions do you have for other techs in the industry that have worked well for you?
The airbrush tanning industry is growing. It is important you stay focused on you and your business. Stay true to who you are. Smile and shake hands with everyone you meet and be confident with what you have to offer. Network and let everyone know who and what you are all about. Other entrepreneurs will remember someone that was confident and friendly. A good reputation is key in growing a successful business. Know. Your. Trade. I can’t stress this enough. A client wants to know they are paying for the best tan in town, but they won’t accomplish that without you as the techs to give them guidance in the prep, application and maintenance. Know your products ingredients. Know what DHA is. Being knowledgeable will not only make you feel confident but also impress your clients.
Where do you see your business a year from now? Are you looking to expand your business?
My business has grown every year and every year I take on something new. This year I have taken on the role as the official airbrush tanning sponsor for the Miss San Luis Obispo County pageant as well as the Miss San Luis Outstanding Teen pageant, both of which will be held February 2018. This is the preliminary to the Miss California and Miss America competitions. I am very excited for this new adventure for Vivacious Beauty. Along with that I have began expanding my services up to northern California in the Bay Area where I am originally from. I predict a year from now that will be completely in motion.
What is your favorite Perfect Glow Product?
My absolute favorite Perfect Glow product is the Rapid Cocktail blend. That was the first sample I tried from Perfect Glow as I had been on the hunt for a good rapid tan and had had no luck in the past. Melissa sent me my Rapid Cocktail sample and I tested it on myself as well as one of my regular clients. OMG we were in love. From that point on I began offering the Rapid Cocktail option and now, less than a year later it is my #1 tan. Once my clients try it, they never go back. Since then I have transitioned to the complete Perfect Glow Sunless line.
What do you like to do in your free time?
My free time is spent chauffeuring my four children (Trey 15, Gianna 12, Steven 9,Cruz 4) around to school and sports, powerlifting with my husband Scott as we both love to hit those PR’s, being a brand ambassador for Just Strong clothing, vlogging for my YouTube channel, sharing my love for Beautycounter products (that goes hand in hand with my air brush tanning business), consuming pizza and sushi whenever I can and ending my long busy days with some Yoga.
