I am pleased to feature Stephanie Johnson as the Perfect Glow Sunless featured business owner for June ! I had the pleasure of getting to meet this savvy spray tanner a few times and most recently when she competed her Elite spray tan certification. Besides being an amazing spray tan artist she is also a certified Trainer for Perfect Glow Sunless in the San Antonio area.
Name of salon: Whiskey Sunsets Airbrush Tanning and Boutique

What was made you start a sunless tanning business?
Before I got into the spray tanning business, I was a stay at home mom. Joining the spray tanning industry happened almost by accident. My oldest daughter is a competitive all star cheerleader and spray tans are just as important as their uniform. After much discussion with my husband, I decided to become certified through the National Association of Sunless Tanning Professionals (NASTP) to be able to provide her spray tans. Other cheerleaders started noticing her beautiful tans and started holding spray tan team parties. By word of mouth, my little hobby grew into a very successful spray tan business.
What do you feel has been a big part of your success?
I believe in running my business with honesty, loyalty and integrity. This has been a huge part of the success of Whiskey Sunsets. As well as using a top of the line solution. I stay current in all of the latest techniques, trends and training so that I can offer my clients only the best experience possible at Whiskey.
What is your favorite part of being a spray tanner?
My favorite part of being a spray tanner is the reactions I get from the clients when they step out of the tent. Their self confidence soars to a new level when they see that tan line.
Have you spray tanned any celebrities? If so how was that experience?
My clientele does not include any celebrities but I am proud to call several prominent clients from the surrounding area mine, including Miss Teen Texas Galaxy 2017.
What was an example of a challenge of being a business owner that you had to adapt to?
Finding my confidence and realizing my self worth has definitely been my biggest challenge. People buy from those that they know, trust and like. One may provide the best service out there but they need to be comfortable with you or trust you. Making sure that I project the utmost confidence in myself and my services has been key in providing only the best services to my clients.
What is an example of a marketing tactic that you found successful to increase your business?
About 2 months ago, I rebranded from My Sunless by SJ to Whiskey Sunsets Airbrush Tanning and Boutique. This involved a new website, new logo & new Facebook account. While the transition from the old brand to the new was quite a pain, the effort was well worth it and Whiskey Sunsets is doing better than ever. As part of the rebranding, I started a small series called “Small Business Saturday Series”. Each Saturday I highlight a local business I had visited during the week. I highly believe in it “taking a village” whether it be with family, friends or any other aspect of life. Small businesses need to stick together and I found this to be a unique way for us to get to know one another. It is great advertising for everyone as well! I have also built an app for Whiskey Sunsets. It makes it easy for the client & provides them with pre and post tan care, keeps track of loyalty rewards and even offers shopping for the boutique. I love how when we are about to offer sales and promotions I can send out a push notification and it pops up on your phone. Its probably my most favorite feature of the app.
What suggestions do you have for newer techs in the industry?
Reach out to other techs in your area. Don’t see them as competition but as those that you can learn from whether it be what works for them and what doesn’t work for them. There is enough business to go around for everyone. Don’t get frustrated. Ask questions and take advantage of the resources in your area as well as online.
Where do you see your business a year from now? I recently signed the contract and lease agreement for my first store front. Whiskey Sunsets is set for a Summer 2017 Grand Opening. I have the support of amazing family and friends behind me as well as the most amazing clients any technician could ever ask for. Whiskey Sunsets is what it is because of them and I wouldn’t be able to make any of this happen without them.
What is your favorite Perfect Glow Product?
The Perfect Glow Sunless Rapid has always been my favorite. But recently I have also become obsessed with the Cocktail 8 Hour blend. But one can’t go wrong with any of the Perfect Glow products!
What do you like to do in your free time?
I am currently in the process of remodeling our “new” travel trailer. It is quite the challenge and I am curious as to what I got myself into LOL! As soon as it is complete (I have a goal to have it finished before July 4th weekend), we plan to get a couple of trips in with the family before school starts back up. My husband and I have 4 kids. When we aren’t at the baseball fields, horse lessons, or tumbling classes, I like to sit down with a good book and just enjoy a nice Texas sunset on our back deck with my loves.
